Top 7 Reasons You Must Teach English Overseas Before You Die

  | Share on Twitter Twitter | Share on Facebook Facebook | Submit to Digg digg it |  Share on LinkedIn LinkedIn
The practice of teaching is an act we use, share and benefit from everyday. Teaching English overseas is a wonderful opportunity to share what you know and have a great time doing it. TEFL Institute has come up with the top seven reasons why no existence is complete unless you have taught English to a foreign people or culture.teach English overseas

1.)    See the world and get paid to do it

Did you ever dream that the Great Wall of China would be within a bus ride of where you live and work? Have you ever wanted to leave the classroom on a Friday and be on a beach soaking up some rays later that afternoon? Did you ever think you would live in a city that features more churches and castles than any other nation in the world? All these things are easily attainable and can characterize your English teaching experience once you complete your 120-Hour TEFL Certification.

There are so many sights and experiences to have and enjoy in this world, and teaching English overseas puts them all within reach. When you are working and living in a country you can sightsee and treasure the top attractions on your time. With a TEFL certification, you will not only have a great job that affords you the funds to enjoy the local lifestyle, but you will also return home with photo albums that will knock the socks off your friends and family!

2.)    Gain valuable international work experience

As the world becomes more globalized, borders are breaking down and information is being shared more freely. Living and working in a foreign country, you will see this firsthand and it will serve you well in your professional pursuits. When someone notices international experience on your resume, it opens up so many doors that were once closed. Being able to interact, relate and understand people from various cultures will make you better-rounded and a truly international presence.

teacher helping student3.)    You have this rare talent

Teaching is a gift that unfortunately not everyone can undertake. You have this skill-set. Take advantage of this important ability. Make the most out of it. There is something to be said for someone who is not only intelligent but passionate about sharing their intelligence and knowledge with others.

4.)    Make new friends that you would never meet otherwise

You probably already have some great friends, but you can always add an extra one. When you are living overseas and teaching English, you will be amazed by how many people want to learn more about you. Locals welcome English teachers into their communities. You will be seen as an educator and often times as a friend. You will be able to learn about what life is like for these people. You will be all the richer for this experience.

5.)    The opportunity to give back

Helping others is a natural inclination. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, about 63.4 million people, or 26.8 percent of the population, volunteered through or for an organization at least once between September 2008 and September 2009.

Language, intelligence, stories - these are all meant to be shared. It is only natural to feel an urge to give back or advance others in some way. Teaching English is a form of giving back, only you will be paid for your English and teaching expertise once you complete your TEFL certification.world traveler

6.)    The fun of it

Teaching and learning are fun! Have you ever wanted to give a lesson on Star Wars? Did you ever think that you could instruct students to role play a conversation on an everyday life/work situation? This is the type of instruction that will resonate the most with your classroom.

These situations and the lesson plans you decide on will make you seem like an ambassador for your home country and city. These are the kind of lessons your students crave. A fluent speaker like yourself can make any lesson fun and interesting. You will also be offering insight into your own background and what it was like for you growing up in your home country.

7.)    The challenge of it

You remember when you were a kid and that math teacher told you how to solve a difficult problem? There was that instant when you probably said in your head or out loud, "Aha, I get it!" It was an amazing experience. You can offer these same moments to students studying English. Teaching English is not easy. It takes time and patience. You will need to be hardworking, diligent and compassionate if your students are going to "get it" - the same way you did when you were in school.

                                       The World is Your Oyster

World CommunityWe all want to give back and feel proud when we reflect on what we have accomplished. One of the best methods for giving back and gaining some global experience is through education and traveling.

You will see the evidence of your successful lessons in your own students. When they apply to Universities overseas, or take business or personal trips to English speaking countries, they will be communicating with the words, phrases and confidence you have taught them.

Those that can speak English for business, travel or any other reason have more opportunities afforded to them. So many more doors are opened with English language proficiency. In essence, when you teach English, you are advancing a people.

There is a reason that academics and leaders in business all have a background in English. Speaking in English is like a megaphone to the rest of the world.  international travel community

The rise of the English language goes back a few hundred years. As a result of the military, economic, scientific, political, and cultural influence of the United Kingdom from the 18th century, and of the United States since the mid 20th century, English has become the lingua franca in many parts of the world, and the most prominent language in international business and science.

Though the English language is far reaching, there are millions of people who strive to learn this all powerful tool for business, education and prosperity. That's where you come in. You are part of the global elite who touts English as your native language. You can educate others and improve their lives simply by sharing what you already know.

Sharing this all powerful skill is not only generous and uplifting but it can be adventurous and profitable. Countries in Asia have such a need for native English Speakers that they will actually pay for the airfare and housing for a teacher to come there. You are worth your weight in gold!

TEFL Institute and the Olympic Appeal

  | Share on Twitter Twitter | Share on Facebook Facebook | Submit to Digg digg it |  Share on LinkedIn LinkedIn

The Olympics are coming, the Olympics are coming! But you probably already knew that. The whole world knew that. You know why?

Teach abroadBECAUSE IT'S THE OLYMPLICS! People have been looking forward to the games since...2006!

Few events attract as much global attention as the Olympic games. Sure, there is the World Cup and the international releases of James Cameron and Steven Spielberg films, but the Olympics successfully organizes the best athletes in the world and displays them for everyone to see. People have the choice to either attend in-person, or watch like everyone else on television.

This year, North America is lucky to be the host continent and all eyes will be on Vancouver, Canada. TEFL Institute is a Chicago, IL-USA based organization but we have offices and schools throughout the world. In just a few days our Canadian brothers to the North will be in the epicenter of sport, competition and revelry.

Throngs of people from practically every continent and country will descend on Canada for the merriment and celebration that only the Olympic games can provide. Adventure, work, job

The Olympics represent a truly international period when peoples of various cultures come together. All too often we only interact with people who are just like us. Nothing wrong with it, but the mind and spirit sometimes craves more.

The Olympics offers the chance to dialog with someone from the other side of the world and learn about what life is like for that person. Wouldn't it be great if we could all attend the Olympics just once, to get a flavor for it?!?

Nine times out of ten, people from other countries have the same hopes, fears, and expectations we have, but it is always nice to hear about the little differences and intricacies that make a culture, country, and people unique.

For instance, did you know that "cat-calling" or, in essence, "whistling at women" is an art form in Argentina! That's right! What could get you smacked in the face in one part of the world is embraced and perfected in the South American nation. Check out other interesting facts on Argentina on the TEFL Institute country overview page.exotic destination, opportunity

Another interesting fact is that in Greece, cab drivers decide whether they will take you to your destination or not. Usually they ask where you are going before you set foot in the cab, and based on their ability or willingness to take you, you either wait for the next cab audition or get going on your way. There are other interesting Greece facts on the TEFL Institute country profile page.

The world is full of these unique aspects of everyday life that vary by each society. TEFL Institute knows these little tidbits because our instructors, advisors and staff have been all over this great, big planet we call earth. They have collected the stories and seen the mysterious and interesting, up close and personal. Travel, TEFL certifcation

They have taken the photos that have made their friends and family jealous. Now they help people just like you to go out and collect the same stories as an English Teacher working abroad.

You can do this too! The first step is deciding you want to see something new and different. The next step is registering for the 120-Hour TEFL Certification course - which you can take in-person at any number of schools, or online on whatever schedule works best for you.

TEFL Institute caters courses to your needs and budget. We look forward to hearing from you! Start your journey today.

But the true appeal of Thailand is the country's spirit, soul and of course the friendliness of the Thai people. Tourists, travelers, backpackers, and yes, English teachers keep coming back, bringing other enthusiasts with them.Teach, Thailand

Thailand has become an attractive destination for English teachers who have completed their TEFL certification. The country offers an abundance of teaching options in a serene setting.

The hustle and bustle of cities like Bangkok offer an urban setting. The luxuries of this famous metropolis go hand-in-hand with the expression R+R, or rest and relaxation. There is also plenty of countryside and natural terrain to explore outside the high-energy capital.

When you are done playing weekend warrior in the country on a nature trek, lie out on the beaches in the southern part of the country. The laid back lifestyle is perfect for people looking to take a load off and soak in some sun rays.

Thailand has a cult following among die-hard travelers because so much of the terrain is preserved. One actually gets the feeling of what it was like to walk around hundreds of years ago. The beauty of the country has remained intact. The people always greet you with a smile and an outstretched hand. There is a reason it is called the "Nation of smiles."

Many Westerners have been captivated by Chinese culture and history. The Cause for Haiti and Teaching Overseas Advice

The eyes of the world are focused on the small, Caribbean nation of Haiti. Along with the Dominican Republic, Haiti occupies the island of Hispaniola, in the Greater Antillean archipelago.

Haitian Creole and French are the official languages. Considered a relatively poor nation, Haiti has a rich and prideful history, unique for several reasons:

  • Haiti was the first independent nation in Latin America
  • Haiti was the first post-colonial independent black-led nation in the world
  • Haiti was the only nation whose independence was gained as part of a successful slave rebellion
  • Haiti is the only predominantly Francophone independent nation in the Americas
  • Lastly, Haiti is one of only two independent nations in the Western Hemisphere (along with Canada) that designate French as an official language.Work Abroad

On January 12, 2010, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Haiti. The capital and largest city, Port-au-Prince, was devastated. Firm numbers have not been made available yet, but at least tens of thousands of people were killed.

It will take time to determine the exact number of dead and degree of destruction. The Presidential Palace, Parliament and many other important structures were destroyed, along with countless homes, businesses, hospitals, schools and shantytowns.

The damage has caused terrible sadness but there is also the chance to rise up again. Haiti is sure to rebound from this difficult chapter in its history. Aid from all over the world is coming in and the once beautiful palace, Parliament and city of Port-au-Prince will stand tall once again.

It will take time but the people of Haiti are resilient. Haiti's neighbors and the international community have a responsibility to help and support the country, in any way possible. With everyone lending a hand, Haiti will undergo a kind of rebirth and hopefully be a stronger nation in the long run.Teach English

Haiti serves as an important lesson for English teachers serving overseas, as well as for volunteers away from home. Disasters can strike at any time but being prepared can make all the difference. If you are planning on teaching or volunteering overseas, make sure you have a "crisis reaction plan." This includes being knowledgeable about:

  • Where your country's consulate/embassy is located
  • Having someone to stay with if your own home becomes unsafe to reside in
  • Knowing where the airport or nearest transportation is located in the event of an evacuation
  • Having a system in place to get a hold of your family or loved ones if traditional communication lines break down
  • Knowing where the nearest hospital or relief station is located

These are just a few things to consider when residing in a foreign country. Traveling throughout the world and seeing far-off lands is a special thing that is more enjoyable when you are being thoughtful, attentive and aware of what to do in case of an emergency.

TEFL Institute has helped thousands of people travel the world and achieve their teaching certification. The goal of our graduates is to work abroad as professional English language instructors. After achieving their TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification, they are free to go anywhere and land the position of their dreams.

* The thousand-year-old egg is a Chinese cuisine ingredient made by preserving duck, chicken or quail eggs in a mixture of clay, ash, salt, lime, and rice hull for several weeks to several months.  After the process is completed, the yolk becomes a dark green, cream-like substance with a strong odor of sulphur and ammonia. Yum!

Japan, Teach EnglishFrom Madison Avenue in New York City, to Piccadilly Circus in London, the opportunity to consume a piece of Japanese food, (sushi, Yonshinoya Noodles, Mochi ice cream) is ever present and ever abundant these days.

The Japanese lifestyle is one that exudes longevity and oneness with the earth. There is a great respect for the land but Japanese people also have a hunger for sightseeing in other interesting locations, outside of their own country.

In keeping itself open to trade and western ideals and practices, Japan has bettered itself and now acts as a brand as well as a country. "Japan Inc." is a term that sprung out of the 1980's when successful Japanese firms began purchasing anything and everything that came on the auction block.

Few could argue with these takeovers because the Japanese system of getting things done is one of the most efficient models in the world. In short, it works. And one-time doubters are quick to jump on the bandwagon because results and facts don't lie. The Japanese work ethic is unmatched.

If the current economy has taught us anything, it's that there is no such thing as a stable market. The supposedly unwaivering brokerage houses of New York along with the declining U.S. auto industry have left many Americans wondering, "Where do we turn when the industries that made this country great are now lagging behind other nations?"

Unemployed citizens must reinvent themselves everyday in every way. Someone who might have run a bank in January may now be working as a firefighter. A Wall Street trader may now be working in a restaurant or bar in order to make ends meets.

The point is that there will always be a need for great civil servants and service industry professionals. But as technology changes and once reliable jobs get phased out, hardworking people are turning to careers that show longevity and offer continuous growth and opportunity.

Times are tough and families and individuals may have to scale back spending. But there will never be a shortage of "American Spirit" and that unique, "Can-Do Attitude" which has always been a characteristic of this great country.

Traditionally when things get rocky at home, people set their sights overseas. While economies may falter and recessions do happen, as long as there are eager people who can travel abroad to teach English than the American worker will always be in-demand.

Have you ever thought of teaching English? It is a fairly quick method to become certified and then travel anywhere in the world to apply your new profession.

The demand for native English teachers in Asia, South America and Europe is high. To learn more about opportunities abroad go to www.tefl institute.comor call (773) 880-5141 and speak with an advisor.
